Brand bidding does not stop at the ads

The term usually means buying ads on someone else’s name. The same thing happens one row lower, in the organic results, where a partner or a stranger ranks on your brand and takes the visitor who was looking for you. Serpward watches that part.

The problem

The visitor searched for you by name and got someone else

Bidding on a brand name is the cheapest traffic there is. The person has already decided; all that is left is to stand between them and the site they meant to reach. Affiliate brand bidding in the ads is the visible version. Pages built to rank on the name — a comparison, a review, a coupon page, a copy of your landing page — are the quieter one, and they hold the position for months.
From inside the company nothing looks wrong: the traffic arrives and the partner is paid for it. What is missing from the picture is that the traffic was already yours.

Method

Four steps, repeated on a schedule

01

You say what to protect, and where

The searches people use to find you, and the markets that matter: country, language, and whether the search happens on a phone or a desktop. You also say what is yours — your domains and your licensed partners. Those are never reported.

02

The results are collected again and again

Each search is re-run on its own schedule. A single snapshot tells you little: pages appear, drop and come back under a new address, and that movement is the thing worth watching.

03

Every page is recorded before anything is sent

The page is opened and captured: a screenshot as it appeared, the passages that match your material, and a check for content shown to the search engine but withheld from the visitor. This happens first, because a page removed later cannot be captured afterwards.

04

The notice goes out, and the position is checked again

A takedown notice is filed with the exact locations and links to the captured evidence, submitted through a real browser. Filing is not the outcome; removal is, so the search keeps running.

Evidence

A notice without evidence is a notice that gets refused

Most takedown attempts fail quietly: a form is filled in, a URL is pasted, nothing is attached. The person reading it cannot see what was on the page, cannot tell which part of it is yours, and has no way to confirm the page is still there. A claim that takes work to verify is the one that gets refused.
Every notice filed here carries the captured result, the passages that match your material, and the time both were recorded.

Coverage

A page ranking on your name in one market is invisible from the others

Brand bidding in organic results is local by nature: the page is written for one country, in one language, and often ranks only on phones. Monitoring is set per combination, not per keyword, because that is how the results are served.

Country

The results in Germany are not the results in Kazakhstan. Each country is watched on its own.

Language

The same country returns different pages in different languages.

Device

A page that ranks on a phone may be absent on a desktop. Both are checked.

Over time

Positions are kept, not just noted: when a page appeared, how long it held, whether it came back.

Who it is for

You need this if any of the following is true

Your name returns pages you did not approve

Searches for your brand bring back coupon pages, reviews and comparisons you have never seen, and some of them stand above you.

You pay commission for visitors who searched for you

A partner ranks on your brand name, the visitor clicks through, and the visit that was going to happen anyway now carries a fee.

Your terms ban brand bidding, nobody checks organic results

The clause covers ads because ads are easy to see. The organic result on the same query is checked by nobody.

A page copies your landing page under another domain

Same offer, same words, a different address — and a position above yours in one market.

You sell where no one on the team searches from

What ranks in one market says nothing about the others, and a page that bids on your brand picks the market where nobody is looking.

Pricing

The number comes after the first search, not before it

There is no self-serve plan. What the work costs depends on how many queries and markets need watching and how much is already out there — and neither of us knows that until we look. The first search costs you nothing.

Questions

What is brand bidding?

Placing yourself in the search results for someone else’s brand name — in the ads by buying the term, or in the organic results by building a page that ranks on it. Either way the visitor who searched for a specific brand is diverted before reaching it.

Do you monitor PPC brand bidding?

No. Serpward watches the organic results — the listings below the ads. Paid placements are a different job with different tooling, and this page would be dishonest if it implied otherwise. The searches that bring people here often mean ads; what is offered is the other half of the same problem.

Is automated brand bidding something you detect?

Only where it produces a page in the organic results. What is automated on the bidder’s side does not matter; what ranks does.

Can our own partners rank on our brand?

That is your call, and the list makes it explicit: your domains and every licensed partner are excluded before anything is reported. Everyone else on your name is recorded.

What do you do with a page once it is found?

It is captured first — a screenshot, the matching passages, a check for content shown to the crawler and hidden from the visitor. Then a takedown notice goes out with that evidence attached, and the query keeps running so a page that returns is found again.

Does this replace a tool that watches the ads?

No. If you already run one, this is the part it does not see.
